A manhunt and investigations are underway after two people were shot and wounded while driving on Interstate-64 in Albemarle County early Thursday morning. The shootings, which were first reported at 12:10 a.m., forced police to close the highway between exit 118 in Charlottesville and exit 96 in Waynesboro for more than five hours.

The two wounded individuals were treated and released from the Augusta County Medical Center: a woman who was transported by ambulance and a man who was able to drive himself to the hospital. A single bullet hole in the windshield of the man's sedan was clearly visible in the parking lot outside the emergency room.

At least four vehicles were hit by gunfire as they traveled westbound along an 11-mile stretch of the interstate.   Bullets also pierced an unoccupied Virginia Department of Transportation vehicle that was parked at a VDOT maintenance facility in Yancey Mills.

Authorities recovered at least three shell casings at the VDOT location.  State police and the ATF are working together to analyze evidence collected from the  scenes and vehicles. State police are in the process of investigating a recent report of a sixth vehicle that may have been shot overnight.

Police have identified three Interstate 64 shooting locations:

  • The westbound off-ramp at the Ivy exit--mile marker 114
  • The overpass at Route 690 around mile marker 106
  • The Virginia Department of Transportation building in Yancey Mills

Authorities from the following jurisdictions are jointly involved in the investigation:

  • Albemarle County Police Department
  • Charlottesville Police Department
  • Augusta County Sheriff's Office
  • University of Virginia Police Department
  • Staunton Police Department
  • Virginia State Police
  • Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney
  • U.S. Marshalls Service
  • FBI
  • ATF

Waynesboro police have also joined the investigation. They are exploring a connection between shootings at the Waynesboro Dupont Community Credit Union and 200 block of North Commerce and the shootings on I-64. For the full story, click here.
