AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - Augusta County’s current sheriff took a commanding lead in his re-election bid and held it. Donald Smith beat Neil Kester with 66% of the vote.

This race gained a lot of attention for a number of issues and controversy, including the failure to obtain accreditation for the sheriff's office coming under scrutiny. Smith promised on Tuesday night that accreditation is a top priority.

“The citizens of Augusta County sent a clear message today. I appreciate it more than you will ever know. To say that I am grateful and humbled would be the least,” said Smith.

Smith won every precinct in Augusta. He has 19 years of experience and says he also plans to focus on school safety.
