ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Eight years ago, Ashton Ryan, told his mother he wanted to collect coats for those in need. That's led to him and a team of volunteers hosting an annual event called 'Ashton's Birthday Wish' to collect thousands of coats, helping keep children and adults warm in the winter.

"You know this started because of an idea that people need coats and that is a heavy purchase on a lot of families. It's something that we can do to help," Ryan said. The team, of about 10 volunteers, has collected over 13,000 coats and they do not plan on stopping anytime soon.

If you want to donate there are drop off locations at the Rio Hills and Hydraulic Krogers, Keglers, Pantop's Applebees, and Giant Food in Charlottesville.
