CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - One Charlottesville group has a novel solution to cut down traffic stops. On Saturday, the city's chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) held its second annual brake light repair event.

The organization offered to change people's brake lights for free in an effort to cut down the number of people stopped by police and ticketed for the offense.

"If we can change brake lights for free, then we can have people avoid unnecessary tickets, unnecessary court appearances, unnecessary interactions with law enforcement. If we can do that for free and help the most vulnerable members of our community then that's what we want to do,” said Nick Cummins, DSA member.

DSA organizers say they changed six brake lights at last year's event, and are hoping to far exceed that number this year.
