Multicultural Health Celebration Empowers Women to Prioritize their Health
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - An event in Charlottesville that focuses on women's health is back and this year's event is bigger and more diverse than ever before. The event called the Multicultural Health Celebration hosted an event on Saturday afternoon with the theme: your health starts with you. It was all about empowering all women to prioritize their health.
"Our health screenings have really increased because we went from being a women's initiative to being something that's multicultural," says Dr. Joann Pinkerton, an organizer of the event.
Saturday's event marked the sixth year the event has been held but the first-year groups such as 100 Black Women and Sin Barreras have joined the efforts.
"I just ask people to try and as women, particularly black women, think about yourself first and come out and take care of yourself, says Dr. Tiffani Dennis, who volunteers with 100 Black Women.
UVA Medical Center CEO Pamela Sutton-Wallace, had advice for any woman who may ignore her own needs to prioritize her child or spouse. "You can't fill their cups if your cup is empty," she says.
Event organizers said this is the biggest year yet for the event and they only hope to grow it even more in the future.
