ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - An Albemarle County man is lucky to be walking away unharmed after his truck caught fire on Route 29 North.

Kenneth Powell says he smelled smoke on his clothing around 5:30 a.m. Friday, September 13. After that, the fumes quickly filled the 1988 Dodge pickup.

Powell said he tried to open the hood of the vehicle, but it burst out in flames. He quickly dialed 9-1-1, and fire crews were able to put out the blaze within a few minutes.

"It got so bad I couldn't see exactly the point where I was at. So about that time I had to try to get out of the truck," said the driver.

Two lanes near Woodbrook Drive were closed for over an hour whiles crews cleaned up the scene.

An exact cause of the fire is still unknown.
