GREENE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - A Ruckersville family is requesting a special use permit to have ducks and chickens at its residential home.

In Greene County, it used to be prohibited to have those types of animals in a residential neighborhood, but supervisors changed the rule. Now, the family wants to keep six female ducks and six chickens in the backyard.

"You can have as many chickens as you want in the agricultural section, but in a neighborhood where the houses are closer together, agricultural uses have a different impact," said Green County Zoning Director Jim Frydl.

After coming up with a plan on how to deal with animal waste, the planning commission recommended approval of the special use permit. The public hearing is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the County Administration Building in Standardsville.
