ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - A bridge on Dickerson Road in Albemarle County is getting some much-need repairs and will cause a few months of detours for drivers.

Starting Tuesday, detours will direct drivers away from construction on a bridge near the Rivanna River. Virginia Department of Transportation crews will be repairing a 70-foot long truss bridge.

The bridge rehabilitation will increase its load capacity, allowing more emergency vehicles to be able to cross.

"When we complete the replacement of the structure, you'll be able to get fire engines across it, emergency vehicles, delivery trucks, and school buses, so really having a structure of three tons limits a lot of vehicular access to the bridge" said VDOT engineer Joel DeNunzio.

VDOT has set up signs to guide drivers to a detour to get back on Dickerson Road. Weather permitting, VDOT hopes to open the bridge to traffic on December 20.
