CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A few good samaritans in Charlottesville spent the day helping clean up the city. The 'Labor of Love Clean Up' took place Sunday afternoon on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall.

Participants put on their gloves and walked up and down the Downtown Mall collecting cigarette butts, plastic bottles, and other trash. The organizer said the event was a way to make a difference in the environment and inspire others to think about how waste affects the planet.

"Picking up garbage when you see it littered is really important because you're not only removing someone else's leftovers, but you're making mental note that this plastic bottle was used for five minutes and now it's trash. I's important to keep litter out of nature and keep it out of the waterways,” said Jes Vegas, advocate.

The cleanup was not only done in Charlottesville but as far as places in California and in Virginia Beach. Organizers are planning another cleanup.
