CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A sweet, pungent smell was coming from a fully stocked refrigerator on the lawn in front of a Cape Coral home on SE 6th St on Thursday.

The fridge was covered in flies feasting on the decaying bread, chocolate milk, and various meat products.

"It's certainly a cause for concern and certainly a health hazard," said Margaret Rojas, who lives nearby. "There's other ways to get rid of food before you put an appliance out and that probably should have been done."

Cape Coral Code Enforcement went out to the home to investigate. It informed the homeowner that a refrigerator or icebox must have the food and doors removed before it's placed outside for pickup.

The city said after learning the homeowner was elderly and needed help code enforcement came out to clean the refrigerator and remove it without issuing a citation.
