CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A new mixed-income housing development aiming to help people with disabilities in Charlottesville cleared its latest hurdle Monday night.

Charlottesville City Council approved a rezoning request which will allow the Hinton Avenue United Methodist church to renovate and add on to its building to create 15 new apartments.

The church plans to partner with a nonprofit to offer at least 4 to 6 of those units to people with developmental disabilities and at least 4 units will also be offered as affordable housing.

Ultimately, the church hopes to secure low income tax credits so all 15 new units can be offered as affordable housing. The church plans to apply for those credits by next spring.
