AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Crews are putting the finishing touches on phase two of the Blue Ridge Tunnel restoration project. This includes the restoration of the tunnel itself and the building of a trail through the tunnel.

Phase three will include the construction of the western side of the trail going from the west entrance of the tunnel to a portion of old Route 250 on the Augusta County side of the mountain.

"I don't think phase three of the western trail will start before September, so next spring is what I would predict," said Allen Hale, the president of the Blue Ridge Tunnel Foundation.

Hale says he wants to make the history of the tunnel a focal point and it will also include handicapped access.
