CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A nature photography workshop took place at the Ivy Creek Foundation on Sunday, thanks to Wild Virginia. About a dozen people learned how to take quality pictures of nature with everything from professional equipment to a cell phone camera.

Steven D. Johnson, professor of visual and communication arts at Eastern Mennonite University, lead the workshop and said the photos can help more people appreciate nature. “You don't have to be a professional in this field to make a contribution. There are all sorts of people who are doing stuff in their backyards paying attention to what's happening in the forest and nearby natural areas and if they can tell a compelling story they'll help create empathy for the natural world."

Johnson said he holds workshops several times a year, to continue to encourage people to take a closer look at their own backyards.
