ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Some young service dogs in training took center stage and showed off their skills Saturday afternoon. Service Dogs of Virginia hosted an open house in Albemarle Square to demonstrate to the public with how it trains dogs.

Nine-month-old puppies navigated through an obstacle course and demonstrated some self-control behaviors. The dogs help people with disabilities in their everyday life.

"We train for people with physical disabilities. So mostly folks in wheelchairs, for diabetes for people who have type one and can't feel when their blood sugar is low. Dogs can actually smell when blood sugar is low so they're life saving,” said Peggy Law, the founder of Service Dogs of Virginia.

The open house is held once a year.

The organization is dependent upon donations for those who would like to donate.
