CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Food Lion is lending its help to donate good to central Virginia food banks in need.

Tuesday morning, Food Lion Feeds announced a new $23,000 commitment to help Charlottesville area food banks feed families. The company has partnered with Loaves and Fishes and Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to deliver the fresh good to the community.

Over the past eight years, donations have included 14 million lbs. of food and more than $600,000 in cash. Last year, the company donated a $50,000 truck to deliver the items to those in need.

"Food Lion associates joined our staff and volunteers in distributing 3,000 lbs. of produce that the company donated," said Michael McKee of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

Two weeks ago, Food Lion also donated $10,000 to the food bank's Family Backpack Program, which helps food children who might go hungry when school is out of session.
