CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The defending national champion UVa basketball team got a verbal commitment Thursday from 4-star point guard Reece Beekman for the class of 2020.

Beekman is from Baton Rouge and rated thee top high school prospect in the state of Louisiana for 2020.   He is rated as one of the top ten best point guard prospects in the country for 2020.

Beekman is 6-foot-2.    He had offers from many of the country's major programs, but he says he chose UVA over some of her other finalists like LSU, Alabama and TCU.

Beekman is in Charlottesville this week taking part in the NBPA Top-100 Camp.

He was asked Thursday if Virginia winning the national championship played into his decision.

"It's not a big factor, but it's a factor," says Beekman.  "Knowing they win a lot and they still want me, that's impressive.  Him as a coach (Bennett) and the school as a whole was the main factor in me coming here. I like to play defense. Playing defense isn't something new. I always play defense. Just going out and playing defense every night, taking on the challenge."

Beekman joins shooting guard Carson McCorkle as Virginia commitments for the 2020 class.
