ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - A contractor is working around the clock to reopen a roadway in Albemarle County.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is replacing a pipe that runs underneath Route 250 / Ivy Road, near Tilman Road.

“I'm not sure when it was put in place, but [the pipe] is very old and it's beginning to fail, so had our eye on this,” said Will Merritt, VDOT. “We scheduled this in early summer to get away from the school bus traffic."

Crews began work around 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, and VDOT hopes to have the road open by 4 a.m. Thursday, June 13.

Excavators were brought in to dig down to the old pipe, remove it, and install a new one in place. Crews will then backfill the area and pave. However, they are working against the clock as rain could come through sometime in the late evening.

Detour signs are in place, but drivers should avoid the area.
