GO Driver Receives Outstanding Community Program Award
06/11/2019 Release from Charlottesville Area Transit:
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - On Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 1 p.m., Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) was presented with the 2019 Outstanding Community Program Award for its Growing Opportunities (GO) Driver program, which achieved excellence in community outreach, training, and recruitment.
“We are thrilled to recognize transit systems and individuals from across the commonwealth for going the extra mile to improve public transportation for all Virginians,” said Lisa Guthrie, executive director, Virginia Transit Association.
CAT launched the GO Driver training program in 2014 in collaboration with the City of Charlottesville Office of Economic Development and Downtown Job Center. GO Driver is a six-week training program that prepares city residents for a career as a Relief Transit Operator. The program, entirely free for eligible participants, equips participants with a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Learners Permit, Passenger Safety & Security Certification, American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certification, and customer service and workplace essential skills.
CAT’s main source of recruitment, GO Driver, has also served as a model for employers in other high demand industries such as healthcare (GO CNA), hospitality (GO Cook), and skilled trades (GO Electric, GO Utilities, and GO Solar). The next GO Driver will begin in mid-July, with employment expected to start in early September. Applications will be available beginning Tuesday, June 11th at the Downtown Job Center, located at 201 E. Market Street in the lower level of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library.
