Orange Co. Child Care Employees Make First Court Appearance Following Abuse Charges
ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Two women facing charges in a child abuse case in Orange County have court-appointed attorneys. They made their first court appearance on Thursday, but details about what happened are still hard to come by.
A grand jury directly indicted Jenean Simms and Brookes Sims on May 28 following a nearly month-long investigation. The Orange County Public School system has not responded to requests for comment.
Jenean Simms is accused of child abuse and neglect and child endangerment stemming from an offense on April 25.
Brookes Sims is accused of child endangerment and failing to report suspicion of child abuse.
The alleged assault happened at the Taylor Education Administration Complex in the town of Orange. The women were listed online as working at Orange County Head Start just days prior but are no longer on the staff listing. Both women are now out on a $5,000 bail.
Brookes Sims is set to be back in court on Friday, June 7 to set a date with her attorney. Jenean Sims’ next appearance is set for June 28.
