CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A Charlottesville native is working to make sure kids from low-income families can stay cool this summer while also having some fun.

Darnell Walker is working to raise thousands of dollars to make sure that every kid in the city who wants to spend time at the pool this summer has the chance to do so.

Going to the pool was a key part in Darnell Walker’s childhood growing up in Charlottesville.

“I know how important the pool was for me and my friends growing up,” Walker said. “Where we had the summer off, what can we do, and it just made a world of difference."

Every summer for the past six years, Walker has flown to Charlottesville from his home in Los Angeles to give out free pool passes to any child in the city or Albemarle County who may need one.

“We are getting some kids who have had to sit out for the last few years at the pool because their families can’t pay the $29 for a pool pass, and of course not $6 a day to send their kids, and then if you live in the county it’s double that,” Walker said.

Walker spent most of Wednesday, June 5, driving around handing out the passes to people like Infinity Waller.

“There are a lot of families in Charlottesville that can't afford to take kids to the pools in the surrounding areas, especially ones with more than two kids because it can get pricey,” Waller said.

Waller says thanks to this kind gesture, her family can now get the same summertime experience as everyone else.

“It makes a big impact when kids are able to go to the pool,” Waller said. “That's going to be something they're going to remember for the rest of their life."

So far this year, Walker has raised over $3,000 and bought more than 100 pool passes.

Walker says he hopes his kindness inspires others to help pay it forward.

“Charlottesville will always have a place in my heart,” Walker said. “You have to go home and do what people did for you when you were there."

Walker will be collecting money for more pool passes throughout the summer, so click here if you’re interested in donating to the cause.
