CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Peabody School in Charlottesville is getting a little bigger thanks in part to a $200,000 matching grant from The Perry Foundation.

The new wing will host a STEM lab, performing arts space, an outdoor sports court, and more classrooms.

Rob Orlando, the head of school, says this expansion is going to bring its current programs to the next level.

“Part of what we're doing at the school is leveraging programs that we already have at Peabody School and adding some capacity to even make those programs better than what we currently have,” Orlando said.

The renovations are part of a $3.4 million capital campaign and are expected to be completed by next spring.

Press Release from the Peabody School:

June 3, 2019: Peabody School is pleased to announce that the Perry Foundation has awarded the school a $200,000 1:2 matching grant for the Peabody 2020 Campaign.

Earlier this year, Peabody announced the school plans to break ground this summer on a new, state-of-the-art academic building that will be an environmentally friendly asset to the community. The new facility will provide a STEM maker lab, new performing arts space, and an outdoor sport court, as well as additional classrooms (see attached photo). This project, along with other improvements to Peabody’s educational facilities, is being funded via a $3.4M Capital Campaign, which has been underway for more than a year.

“We are very excited about this project at Peabody,” said Head of School Rob Orlando. “This is the final phase of a long-term strategic plan, and we are pleased to do this in conjunction with Peabody School’s 25th anniversary celebration in 2019-2020.” The project will contain the following components:

  • A new STEM Maker Lab will offer students a unique opportunity for hands-on experiential learning, outfitted with technologies including 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing machines, and arduino boards. Students will integrate cross-discipline knowledge developing skills in programming, math, science, and art to design and engineer their own creations.
  • Dedicated space for our music and performing arts programs, with special acoustic design, recording technology, and soundproof practice rooms.
  • LEED-compliant building with opportunities for solar and storm-water recycling, pollinator and vegetable gardens, a new PreKindergarten playground, and an engaging outdoor activity trail. Also, a new outdoor multi-use court and amphitheatre seating will serve as the students’ main play area and connect with existing green space.
