CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A student from the Renaissance School in Charlottesville was surprised with a scholarship from the Army on Friday.

Artemis Bowman just completed the school's two-year college counseling program - an achievement her classmates helped celebrate on Friday morning. At an assembly on the school's final day of classes, she was awarded a check for more than $200,000 from an Army ROTC representative.

In addition to tuition and books, the scholarship includes a stipend each month. Bowman says the military needs more educated women in its ranks.

"Education is extremely important to me and I believe people with really good education...we need more of that in the military and we need to have these strong confident women who have been highly educated in the military," Bowman said.

Bowman says her family's own military history also gave her the confidence to know she wants to join the military and spend the next four years in an ROTC program. She is still deciding on what school she will attend in the fall.
