Albemarle Police Arrest Man in Connection with Suspicious Death Investigation
Press Release from Albemarle County Police Department:
On May 16, 2019, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the Albemarle County Police Department responded to a report of a deceased male found along the trails of the Rivanna River; behind Peter Jefferson Parkway.
Through the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the deceased male, later identified as 24-year-old Cody Jason Cappel of Charlottesville, was shot multiple times and had died near the scene of the shooting.
Detectives with the Albemarle County Police developed 49-year-old Allan Ray Via of Charlottesville as a suspect and subsequently placed the following criminal charges against him:
18.2-32 Murder: 2nd Degree
18.2-308.2 Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon
Via was arrested by police on May 17, 2019 and is currently being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail without bond. Additional criminal charges against Via are pending at this time. Both Via and Cappel appear to be acquaintances, living in tents near the trails along the Rivanna River at the time of the
shooting. Police are treating this as an isolated incident.
