CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A Charlottesville judge is being honored for ensuring equal justice in the community. On Monday afternoon, Judge Robert Downer received the Gideon Award at CitySpace in Downtown Charlottesville.

The general district judge was recognized for his ongoing concern for defendants, promoting fairness and equality, and for establishing a therapeutic docket which helps transform lives.

"It's a great honor because it is just frankly the best part of being a judge is trying to work with people.  You know, I don't judge anybody.  All I try to do is work out the problems for the people that come before me,” said Downer.

The Citizens Advisory Committee for the Charlottesville - Albemarle Public Defender Office gives out the Gideon Award each year. Judge Downer is set to retire in June.
