MADISON COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Shenandoah National Park says a skunk in Madison County tested positive for rabies after it bit a visitor in the Whiteoak Canyon parking area Saturday, May 4. 

The skunk was removed. The regional health district is urging people to report if you or your pets came in contact with the animal: Call Madison County Animal Control at (540) 948-7042, or the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District at (540) 347-7620.

Rabies is a deadly disease and can be fatal if untreated.

Officials say skunk spray does not transmit rabies.
