Seniors Lead STAB Lax Into State Playoffs
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The St. Anne's-Belfield boys lacrosse team is led by its seniors.
"Really, a foundational class," says head coach Bo Perriello. "Fourteen kids. Eight going on to play in college, which ties the most for us, back in 2010. Some great kids, some great families, who have invested a awful lot in our program."
Senior attack Connor Shellenberger says, "It's definitely pretty cool, and it'll be exciting next year to play against those guys, and see how they're doing in college, and even throw a little trash talk in there."
The trash talk has already started. Shellenberger is headed to Virginia. Teammate Emmett Barger will play at Notre Dame. Those two teams played for the ACC Championship last weekend, with UVa taking home the title.
"Emmett and I were going back-and-forth over text," says Shellenberger, "and I know he had a little bit of a rough Saturday, but it was definitely fun."
Barger says, "That was a rough one. I think Notre Dame had an off day, but UVa had a good game. It's been a while since they got that trophy, and hats off to them."
Shellenberger is the Number One ranked prospect in the Class of 2019. He played at the Bullis School in Maryland last year, but returned home to STAB for his senior season.
"I just wanted to be with my family," says Shellenberger. "We had a great senior class as well, and just be with the friends I've been with since the sixth grade, and graduate with them."
Barger says, "He's a great guy. We love playing with him. He excels my game, he excels the teams game, and it's really fun to be able to ball out with him this year."
Perriello adds, "It's great to get him back, and finish this out with his hometown teammates here, and for us to hopefully put an exclamation point on the end of the season for this senior group."
The Saints' senior class is looking for its first state championship.
Shellenberger says, "We lost in the championship game my freshman year, which is tough. It's something that's still in my stomach, and even my sophomore year, losing in the semifinals, is something that, I still have pictures hung up, for motivation."
"If we lose, it's all over," says Barger. "There are so many seniors on this year's team, that everybody cares. Everybody has bought in. Every game that we have, we're hungry. We're going to do everything we can to win, and I think everybody understands that."
