Thousands Impacted by Telephone Service Outage in Central Va.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A telephone service outage is impacting thousands of people in central Virginia.
CenturyLink reported the service outages on Saturday, April 13.
It impacted an estimated 12,430 customers, according to city and county leaders.
Starting around 8 a.m. Saturday, people using cell phones were not able to call for emergency help.
“Whether it was an emergency or a nonlife-threatening issue, if you had or did not have access to a landline, there was no way to connect with the sheriff’s office for need of help so we wanted to notify the public immediately and give them an alternative source to call,” Kevin Freid of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office said.
The problem was fixed around 12 p.m. Saturday.
We’re still waiting on a response from CenturyLink about what caused the widespread outage.
