UVA Fans Flood Scott Stadium to Celebrate Basketball Championship
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - It was a big day for the ‘Hoos and all of their fans on Saturday.
Hundreds of community members from all corners of the commonwealth are celebrating the men's basketball championship victory on Saturday, April 13.
It was a sea of orange and blue inside of Scott Stadium Saturday afternoon as fans cheered for the team's coach Tony Bennett and all of the players.
Some fans started lining up outside the stadium around 10 a.m., about four hours before the celebration was scheduled to begin. Once the gates opened, people decked out in UVA gear flooded the bleachers.
Before the team took the stage, several speakers addressed the crowd including the university's athletic director Carla Williams.
Fans then roared as the team, along with Coach Bennett, came out to celebrate with them.
“Well, it's long overdue,” Terry Martin, a UVA fan who attended the celebration, said. “Last year was very disappointing, losing to a 16-seed in the first round of the tournament as a number-one seed. So to finally be able to do that and to be able to celebrate with the entire community of Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, and all over is an outstanding feeling for the community of UVA.”
Some fans also took Saturday’s celebration as a chance to purchase some new UVA championship gear.
Many fans in attendance said they hope the team remains together and stays strong and hopefully they can pull out another big win next year.
