CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Policy pundits and marijuana advocates are discussing the benefits Virginia could see if it legalized the drug.

On Wednesday, April 10, as part of a Tom Tom Festival panel discussion called “The Future of Cannabis,” the group discussed the entrepreneurial, social, and political opportunities that come with legalizing marijuana.

Panelists also discussed the challenges of banking, taxes, and interstate commerce since marijuana is only legal recreationally in a handful of states.

“If we want to see the end of federal prohibition, in my view we have to get to the point where we have 25 states across the country that have legalized,” Steve Hawkins, the executive director of Marijuana Policy Project, said. “I think there’s a map to get there over the next three years. It’s not impossible, but it’s going to require concerted effort and resources.”

Panelists say five states are currently looking at legalizing marijuana on a recreational basis.
