Panelists Weighing In Preparing Charlottesville for Autonomous Vehicles
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - With a driverless car pilot program coming to Albemarle County, experts are weighing in on the pros and cons of the technology.
Panelists spoke about how to prepare a city for autonomous vehicles during a Tom Tom Summit & Festival event Wednesday, April 10.
"The big thing that we advise cities on doing is making sure that they identify the future that they want - as opposed to that the future that technologists will give us - and the ability to manage that will improve the lives of not only the citizens but also for private companies as well, providing a safe and equitable transportation system," said Joe Iacobucci, panelist.
Last week, the county announced it’s in the final phase before its pilot program comes in the spring.
Panelists at Wednesday’s event said a lot of these vehicles can sometimes be safer than those with drivers behind the wheel, but that cities need to be prepared for potential technology failure and make a safety plan.
