Virginia Department of Transportation workers and community members are remembering those killed on the job.

On Monday evening, VDOT officials held their annual vigil to honor those lives. They gave a moment of silence for those killed and injured in works zone crashes.

Several people spoke on the topic of safe driving, and there was a surprise visit from one top official.

“In 2018 the numbers are better--about 5.4% better--there is still 2,523 crashes. 1,258 injuries and 9 fatalities and what our whole aim in highway safety is to accept nothing less than zero,” said Shannon Valentine, the secretary of transportation.

The vigil occurred in the middle of National Work Zone Awareness Week, as a reminder for drivers to be careful in work zones.
