ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - The Albemarle County School Board is working to make sure the school division is more equitable for everyone.

On Thursday night the board met with top school officials to run through the Albemarle County Public School (ACPS) equity checklist. The group split into small teams to discuss how to address hypothetical scenarios concerning race, diversity, and equity.

School Board Chair Jonno Alcaro said the practice will help leaders in the division work toward closing the achievement gap.

"We want it to become second nature when putting together policies or reviewing policies to see how we can improve them to improve the equity for all students because this is really about finding what’s right for all students,” said Alcaro.

The effort arrived on the heels of Superintendent Matt Haas banning confederate and other hate imagery in schools. That ban went into effect earlier in March.
