03/25/2019 Updated Release from Virginia State Police:

LOUISA CO., Va. - On March 24, 2019 (Sunday) at approximately, 9:28 p.m., the Virginia State Police responded to a three vehicle crash with a confirmed fatality at westbound I-64 at the 134.5 mile marker.

The trooper's preliminary investigation reveals that a 2012 Nissan Murano, driven by, Kenneth T. Owens, 56, of Waynesboro, Va. was traveling westbound when he ran off the right shoulder striking a 2006 Jeep Liberty, that was abandoned and disabled on the right shoulder. The Nissan then overturned several times going off road right. A Honda CRV also traveling westbound, sustained damage from hitting debris from the crash.

Owens was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. An infant that was located in the back seat was properly secured in a child safety seat. The infant was checked at the scene and was transported to the hospital by helicopter for treatment of minor injuries and observation. There were no other injuries reported.

The crash remains under investigation.

LOUISA CO., Va. - On March 24, 2019 (Sunday) at approximately, 9:28 p.m., the Virginia State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash with a confirmed fatality at westbound I-64 at the 134.5 mile marker.

The trooper's preliminary investigation reveals that an adult male driver of a Nissan SUV was traveling westbound when he veered to the right striking an abandoned disabled vehicle (second vehicle) on the shoulder. The Nissan then overturned several times going off road right. A Honda CRV (third vehicle) sustained damage from hitting debris from the crash.

The male driver of the Nissan was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. An infant that was located in the back seat was properly secured in a child safety seat. The infant was checked at the scene and has been transported to the hospital by helicopter for treatment that presently, appears to be minor. There were no other injuries reported.

The crash is in its preliminary stages of the investigation. An update will be provided once proper notifications have been made.
