CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A special workshop in Charlottesville is empowering young women by teaching them some helpful home improvement skills.

The Empowering You: Toolbox Workshop at IX Art Park taught dozens of women how to build shelves and patch drywall among other useful skills.

Chelsea Short, a University Of Virginia Electrician who helped organize the event, said home improvement can be easier than people may think.

“It’s not always the most convenient to have to call on someone else to do something when it could be an easy fix yourself. If you've never done it or never learned how to do it you might not realize the simplicity of it,” said Short.

The workshop also taught women how to install a programmable thermostat and build a bookcase.

Organizers said additional workshops are in the works, and dates for them will be announced shortly.
