Tom Tom Announces 1st Winning Design for the 2019 City Art Bus Competition
03/13/2019 Release from the Tom Tom Festival:
Charlottesville, VA (March 13, 2019) — The Tom Tom Festival, Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT), and JAUNT are proud to announce this year’s first winning artist for the fifth annual City Art Bus competition.
The design, which was recently wrapped onto a CAT bus, was created by Egypt - an artist and muralist from Los Angeles, California currently based in Tampa, Florida. Her work “New Beginnings, Eternal Life” amplifies a story of growth, transition, and culture by featuring iconic black artists, performers, and intellectuals, juxtaposed with imagery of African nature scenes and Egyptian royalty. Egypt’s design won both the popular vote and the vote from the CAT bus drivers.
“Through various portraits, images and colors, this design tells a story of strength, diversity, hope, and the willingness to succeed,” commented Egypt. “Each portrait represents a person who has accomplished something great and never gave up. I hope that this design will show the youth and community as a whole that we are all equal, we are all strong, and anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”
Egypt’s design is on the roads now. The JAUNT bus will be unveiled and the second winning artist will be named later this month. Both buses will be live on the city’s streets by early April and during the eighth annual Tom Tom Festival (April 8–14) in Charlottesville. More information on the City Art Bus competition can be found at www.tomtomfest.com/city-art-bus.
Egypt moved to New York where she held her first solo exhibition in 2014 at Java Studios Gallery in Brooklyn. Her artwork is influenced by society, culture, historical figures, street art, and life experiences and is recognized for its vibrant colors and powerful images. Today, she continues to work on numerous projects and commissions while exhibiting her artwork around the world. In its fifth year, the annual City Art Bus initiative has expanded to include the wrapping of both CAT and JAUNT public transit buses. These two moving murals operate on bus lines throughout Charlottesville and Albemarle County and will be seen by an estimated 200,000+ riders and residents throughout the coming year.
