'Larry' the giant gator becomes a celebrity in a Florida retirement community
SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. - Residents of a Florida community called "The Villages" enjoy the sunshine, the breezes across the golf course lake, and their very own local celebrity: A giant alligator named Larry.
Larry lives in a lake by the golf course, and when he gets bored, he gives his human neighbors a thrill, making his gargantuan presence known.
Marc Cher's son shot video of Larry strutting his stuff across a golf cart path. Needless to say, traffic stopped both ways.
"I was first scared out of my pants because he was so large. And at first I didn't believe what I was seeing. I mean, it was like looking at a prehistoric monster. And I had one foot on my accelerator on my golf cart in case he made a move," said Cher.
Now, Larry isn't just any Florida gator, he's a celebrity! People stop and marvel at him often. He even has a plaque with his name on it, as well as a Facebook account.
People in the community know all too well not to feed him, to keep children and pets away, and to keep a safe distance... But even so, he's an enjoyable source for entertainment.
