CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - NBC29 is being sold to a new corporate owner.

WVIR-TV’s parent company, Florida-based Waterman Broadcasting, made the announcement Monday, March 4.

“The decision to sell WVIR-TV has been challenging and emotional,” said Waterman Broadcasting President Edith B. Waterman. “We have had the great privilege of proudly serving Charlottesville and its surrounding communities since 1986.”

Gray Television will be acquiring NBC29. Pending federal approval, this sale could be finalized in the second or third quarter of this year.

Gray simultaneously announced Monday that it would be selling CBS19, ABC16 and Fox27 to an affiliate of Lockwood Broadcasting.

“The decision to sell our Charlottesville television stations has been very difficult,” said Gray Chairman and CEO Hilton Howell Junior said.

Gray Television owns or operates stations in 91 television markets.
