Divers encounter great white shark while spearfishing off Florida coast
JUPTER, Fla. - A group of divers in Florida came face-to-face with a great white shark in a heart-stopping experience that was caught on camera.
The encounter happened 60 feet under the surface off the coast of Jupiter.
"I probably got about 20 feet away. It was just awesome. Making eye contact with a great white shark just a unique situation. It was just beautiful," said one of the divers, Tommy Allore.
The group was out spearfishing when they came across the shark. One of them estimated it between 10 to 13 feet.
GoPro video shows them getting close to the great white as it was swimming circles around a shipwreck.
Surprisingly, the divers kept their cool the entire time.
"There's a level of respect, and you understand the power of the animal, but it wasn't a fear. It was more adrenaline. We were excited, we knew it was a special moment," described Allore.
The shark, named Salty, was tagged by a research group in Massachusetts seven years ago.
If you encounter a great white shark, Allore said to avoid splashing and to stay calm.
