CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - St. Anne's Belfield senior point guard Dalton Taylor is shouldering a heavy load as the team's unquestioned leader.

"Bring out the best in everyone day in and day out," says Taylor.  "It's a big responsibility but I love it."

Taylor is averaging about 12 points per game.   He leads the team in steals and assists (4.3 apg)

"He facilitates, but he has to know who's hot, and he has to get everyone shots," says STAB head coach Damin Altizer.  "He does a good job of shouldering that and welcoming that responsibility to make sure the hot guy is getting the ball.  He's just been phenomenal and taking what the defense has given him or giving other guys.  As a coaches son that's what you'd expect."

Dalton Taylor's dad is Tim Taylor, who's coached at both the high school level and in college as an assistant at Virginia.

"He told us when he was younger that he wanted to be a college basketball player," says Tim Taylor.  "I told him with that comes responsibility.  This is not dad, this is coach.  Lot of times he didn't like me very much but he always knew I loved him and was trying to push him to get to the level that he needed to get to."

"There's a fine line between dad and coach and sometimes it gets mixed up," says Dalton Taylor.  "We've had some late nights at the gym, but I know it's out of love and he's always pushed me and molded me to be the player I am today."

"But I'm proud of him," says Tim Taylor.  "I'm not just proud of what he does on the court, he's a what he's done off the court, I think he's a servant leader."

Dalton Taylor will likely continue his playing career in college at the division three level.   He wants to major in engineering.    Taylor is math wiz.

"Always been able to solve problems," says Taylor.  "It just comes easy and natural, for me writing a paper is lot harder than doing a math problem."

For now, Taylor's goal is to help lead the Saints to a Prep League championship.

"It's a huge deal," says Taylor.  "Since I've  been here my sophomore year we've never won it.  It would be a huge way to go out and get the conference championship."

STAB plays Collegiate in the Prep League tournament semifinals on Friday.   The Saints have a record of 15-9 this season, including 8-3 in the conference.
