Study: Fifth of Louisa County Residents Experience Food Insecurity

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - People in Louisa County are among the most food insecure in the commonwealth, according to a new study from the University of Virginia.
The UVA Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service conducted the survey over several years. Researchers say 22.3 percent of the population in Louisa County fell into that category. The national average is 11.8 percent.
Tom Guterboch, the director for survey research, says their work was sparked by an assistant program .
“The Community Cupboard that is run by the Louisa County Resource Center [sic] serves a huge number of people - thousands of people - but we know that’s not the full extent of the need, and they wanted to know are we reaching all the parts of the county,” said Guterboch. “One of the great things is the study has a real consequence. Because of the data they found out that they need to open up a satellite center in the western end of the county where people can get their food."
