Customers at Brown's Cleaners in Charlottesville are picking up their clothes, and saying their final goodbyes to the decades old business.

For the next two weeks, people will finally be able to pick up their items that have been trapped inside since December 24, 2018.

Customers say they're sad to see the business close its doors, and many say they'll miss the staff the most.

"I’m really sad for the employees they've kind of become like family. They had the same people for a long, long time. I’m also sad for me because it was a good place to drop the shirts off and they did a good job,” said Mary Miller, who has been a loyal customer for 30 years. "It’s the end of an era.”

On Monday, January 7, Miller along with many others rushed to the East High Street location to pick up their clothes for the final time.

Customers lined the sidewalks at the Preston Avenue location waiting to grab their items as well. Many were not happy with the news they had received weeks prior.

While many customers are happy to have their things, they're sad to see the longstanding business go.

"I think you get used to everything in life and change is sometimes good, but it is sad to say goodbye to Brown's,” stated Miller.

Brown's Cleaners on East High Street and Preston Avenue are the only two pick up locations for clothing items.

Only cash or card will be accepted for pickups, with anything left at the end of the two weeks being donated to charity.

If you have clothing items to pick up, you have until January 18 to grab them at one of the two open locations.

Here are the pickup details:

  • Customers can come over the next two weeks between Monday and Friday.
  • East High Street customers can come between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. and Preston Avenue customers can pick up their garments from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • People who use the Ivy or Millmont Road locations must pick up their items at the East High location.
  • All furs will be located at the Preston Avenue location.
