ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Several basketball teams across central Virginia will shoot hoops for a good cause on Saturday, January 5.

More than 10 teams across Albemarle and surrounding counties will compete in the play for 'Play For Preemies Showcase'.

Tickets for the showcase will be $10 and all of the admission proceeds will be donated to the UVA Children's Hospital and Carilion Clinic Children's Hospital.

The girls head basketball coach at Western Albemarle, Kris Wright, started the fundraiser 3 years ago and said the cause is very personal to him and his family.

”Because I have kind of a platform in the community, we decided can we do something through the program that we're going to do anyway. We're going to play games anyway can and create awareness. I keep telling people that NICU nurses, doctors, and all the people around the NICU's and hospitals are really kind of super heroes,” said Wright.

The showcase will be on Saturday, January 5 at Western Albemarle High School.

The first of six games begins at 11:30 a.m.
