ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Several schools in Albemarle County could soon have new names.

On Thursday, December 6, the Albemarle County School Board got an update on the process of reviewing the way the division names buildings.

This comes after school administrators learned that the namesake for Cale Elementary made racist remarks.

On Thursday night, the board reviewed changes to the policy and requirements of naming a school and provided feedback.

"We have a very contemporary mission statement and all of our school names - if we decide to look at renaming one - we will study the history of that person and look at if they really fit in with those values of our mission,” Patrick McLaughlin, the school system's strategic planning officer, said.

The board will be presented a final draft of the policy at its first meeting in January.
