UVa Men's Basketball is ranked fifth in the preseason polls and had its home opener tonight against Towson University.

The Cavaliers will begin their season 1-0 after tonight's 73-42 win over the Tigers. The last five times the two teams have met UVa has won every game.

Mamadi Diakte, Jack Salt, and De'Andre Hunter, Kyle Guy, and Ty Jerome were the starting lineup.

Virginia got off to a slow start, however Hunter was able to score early and had a total of 13 points. Jerome also had a big game. He had a total of 20 points, four assists, three rebounds and two assists, and made three of four 3-pointers.

Towards the end of the game Virginia cleared its bench. A handful of local players were able to get game time including Albemarle's Austin Katatra, Grant Kersey, and Jayden Nixon.

The Cavaliers shot 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from the 3-point line.

"Kihei gave us a nice lift and it got Ty going as well, so they did a good job. He energizes us with his tenacity on the ball, poking the ball and making the play,"  says head coach Tony Bennett.

"Just being a pass first point guard and get my guys involved and when you have people around like Kyle and Jerome shooting the ball like that, it makes my job easy," says Kihei Clark.

"He can really run a team similar to me, so I have faith in him to run the team so I can focus on doing other stuff," says Ty Jerome.

"Those guys the first time they ever touched the floor for a college game that I don't know, that is one of the greatest joys and I know about the trembling and I said be courageous even if you're trembling a little bit, but I loved it," says Bennett.

Virginia hosts George Washington on Sunday at 2 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
