CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The American Legion in Charlottesville is helping the homeless stay warm as we approach chillier weather.

Post 74 has been collecting items like coats, sweaters, socks, and hand warmers since the beginning of September.

On Friday, October 12, they're packing up and delivering the gear to the Salvation Army and PACEM, which provides shelter for the homeless in winter months.

“But this is kinda special for us because it's local,” Randy Wood of American Legion Post 74 said. “And local is what we enjoy doing here for the people of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. And anytime that, like I say, they need help, to contact us. We're here for the communities."

Wood adds that the post has several events coming up soon.

On Saturday, October 13, the group will host an event with music and dancing.
