GREENE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - A new class at William Monroe High School is teaching students about cybersecurity on phones and computers.

The Cybersecurity Fundamentals class teaches students what cybersecurity is and why it is important.

Jess Stafford, who teaches the class, says it is helping to prepare students for future careers. “Our mission right now is to innovate. We want to give kids hands-on learning opportunities to learn information that they’re going to be able to apply immediately to their lives now as well as prepare them for life after school.”

Students in the class solve codes and crack secret messages.

William Monroe’s principal said funding for the class came out of the school’s regular budget.
