RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - The two candidates competing for Congressman Tom Garrett’s seat are set to have their first debate on Wednesday night.

Republican Denver Riggleman and Democrat Leslie Cockburn will go head-to-head just two months before the November midterm elections determine who will represent the 5th District for the next two years.

This will be the first time the candidates get to debate on stage after Riggleman could not attend a forum in Charlottesville last month. Both candidates said they hope Wednesday’s debate will be the chance to discuss important issues for the 5th District.

“The biggest issue for me and the people of the fifth District is healthcare, and everything to do with it,” Cockburn said.

Cockburn spent Tuesday meeting with people of Charlottesville at Champion Brewing Company as women of the 5th District registered to vote.

Riggleman said he is excited for the event and a chance to meet Cockburn in person.

“I think it’s going to be pretty interesting to watch two different philosophies go back-and-forth on stage,” Riggleman said.

Congressman Garrett announced he would not be running for re-election in May after saying he was struggling with alcoholism and wanted to focus on recovery and family.

Wednesday night’s debate is the first of four scheduled debates between the two candidates. A full list of the date and location of the remaining debates can be found below and a link for a live stream of Wednesday’s event in Rappahannock County can be found here
