CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - An information session in Charlottesville is helping people break into a new career.

The city’s Downtown Job Center hosted an hour-long event Wednesday morning at CitySpace. People were able to fill out an application for a pair of Growing Opportunities (GO) programs.

GO Driver [pdf] and GO Cook [pdf] are six-week training programs to help people get their commercial drivers’ license or break into the restaurant business.

"It's really finding out what the needs are, developing the training curriculum to address specifically those needs. So we're not giving people stuff they're not going to be able to use. We're giving them stuff they're able to use once they start the job and it's going to be the thing that gets them the job and allows them to keep that as well," said Hollie Lee, City Workforce Development Strategies

Applications for GO Driver are due by 4 p.m. August 31. GO Cook applications are due by 4 p.m. August 16.
