Judge Sentences Man to 25 Years in Prison for First-Degree Murder
An Augusta County man has learned that he will spend 25 years in prison for beating a man to death.
AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - A man in Augusta County has learned that he will spend 25 years in prison for beating a man to death.
Last December in Augusta County Circuit Court, a judge found Steven Lanier guilty of first-degree murder.
Prosecutors proved Lanier beat 53-year-old Johnnie Johnson to death at the Skyline Motel on Jefferson Highway back in October of 2016.
On Wednesday, August 1, the judge who sentenced Lanier said this was a brutal crime and the 25 years should send a clear message that "I am not going to tolerate this kind of behavior in Augusta County."
Carlton Currier, who was also charged with first-degree murder in connection with Johnson's death, is expected to plead on Friday, August 17.
