CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A man's body has been discovered near the edge of Moores Creek by the Exxon gas station on 5th Street.
Authorities received a report of a body seen in that area shortly before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31.
As of around 4:45 p.m., the body had been identified but the name will not be released until after the family is contacted. The deceased male is said to be in his mid-50s and has tattoos on his right shoulder.
Heather Houchens, the daughter of Samuel Lee Houchens, posted the following to Facebook:
Hey everyone, thanks for all your concern. I spoke with the detective and he is 99 percent sure this is not my dad. The tattoos don’t match with my dad’s.
The 53-year-old man was last seen on June 20 in the 1600 block of Meridian Street. Search teams have combed areas around Moores Creek, but have not found him.
Officials blocked off a portion of Moores Creek, as well as the bridge between the gas station and 5th Street Station while they worked the scene.
A ladder truck with the Charlottesville Fire Department was brought in to lift the body out of the creek.
